It’s completely normal for your child to be feeling a little anxious and uneasy about starting childcare and let’s face it you might be feeling a little nervous about the experience too. To help you make this transition as comfortable as possible for both you and your child, we have put together some useful tips we give to new parents at Bowen Hills Early Learning.
Although this can be a daunting experience for both you and your child, it’s important to communicate to them and manage their expectations. A helpful tip to ease your child’s anxiousness is ensuring they have some understanding of what will happen when they are at their childcare centre.
It’s important to mention the fun activities they will be doing and the friends they will make as well as talking about their feelings about missing home and being upset. The most important thing to remember during this transition is to stay positive and view childcare for what it is – a fun, nurturing and caring environment!
Another way to ease your child into their new centre is by introducing them to a routine similar to their centre’s schedule. Consistency is key and helps your child know what to expect: getting changed, having breakfast, brushing their teeth and packing their bag/belongings.
We also recommend new parents bring their child to visit the centre a few times before their start date. This allows your child to get use to their new environments and educators. Little ones all become comfortable with childcare at different rates but this step can help to manage their expectations and make the transition from home to childcare a little easier.
At the beginning, it’s important to try to get to the centre with some time to spare. This way, both you and your child have plenty of time to organise their belongings, talk to staff and spend a few minutes to reassure each other before you have to leave.
Goodbyes are the hardest part, for both parents and children. It is important to give your little one a kiss and a cuddle and then let staff take over. For your child’s first few days, it can be beneficial for you to settle them into an activity before you say goodbye. A comfort item from home like a toy or blanket can also help ease your child’s transition and help them to feel less anxious.
Here at Bowen Hills Early Learning we understand how difficult it can be to send your little one to a childcare centre and away from home. Don’t hesitate to contact us if you would like more information, we are happy to support you and your child in any way we can.
